With the Hispanic population the USA being one of the fastest growing segments, (58% increase between the 2000 and 2010 Census), having the skill of basic understanding and communication with this large and growing group can increase patient and provider satisfaction, as well as expand your client base. This class is designed for all types of Medical and Healthcare workers, from Assistants to Nurses, Acupuncturists to Massage Therapists, including the myriad of other Therapists & Technicians who work with patients. You will get a new view on communication and a new skill set to ease your discomfort when dealing with Spanish speaking clients, and a new found relaxation at work in addition to an expansion of your service potential.
Learning Spanish has never been so fun! This week long course will teach you basic communication skills in Spanish, give you immersion Spanish experience, provide you with a relaxing tax deductible vacation in Costa Rica and give you 20 continuing education contact hours. Upon completion of this course you will be able to complete a basic health history, review of systems and assessment with the Spanish Speaking client. We have arranged great off the beaten trail lodging options — including one night at an awesome hot springs volcano lodge with mud baths and a 250 meter water slide, a rain forest mountain lodge and a great beach location. You make your own arrangements for flights, of course I am happy to help and advise. The class fee includes didactic, a book and immersion experiences such as a medical facility tour and or meeting with other health care professionals. Here we will meet with of Doctors, Nurses and or Pharmacists and explore their work area, medicines and equipment. We will have a mix of didactic and active learning activities, and are able to keep all levels of Spanish speakers interested, learning and involved. Come and join the learning fun!
We will hear about the different medical delivery systems here, as well as the different medicines available here. We can tour the local shops to see what is available at a grocery, macrobiotica and tour a volcano on horseback, take a cacao tour, and a rainforest waterfall hike included in the lodging fees. Other options include enjoying the beach, snorkling, diving and fishing tours or just hanging out in the town, meet locals and enjoying the sights. We usually get a few locals to pose as patients for us and let us do mock intakes and exams on them for even more cultural exchange.
If class participants want come early or stay later and enjoy other areas and offerings in Costa Rica, we will be delighted to discuss your goals and offer suggestions of places and hotels we have visited in the past. For a small country there are so many varied environments and things to do. There is no way one can see the entire country in a week, so please let us know what would make your heart sing!

About the instructor: Deepa has been an Emergency Room Nurse in California since the early 1990’s, and has been translating Spanish for clients the entire time! She studied French in High School and at the University, and as she began her career in Nursing she realized that she could understand the Spanish people were using, but that her only available responses were in French. The clients were able to understand her French, and then they translated the words to Spanish for her. Over the decades of working in the ER, with multiple trips to Mexico, Costa Rica and South America, Deepa has gained quite a proficiency in Spanish; she has created this program to highlight tips that help others learn to communicate easily with their Spanish speaking clients. Her enjoyable teaching style relaxes the learner, takes away the stress and fear around learning a new language and makes it fun. We do not memorize lists or conjugations, we focus on how to simply communicate your needs and ask questions in such a way as to get simple, easy to understand answers. Using a mix of didactic, experience and play we will expand our communication tools and have an enjoyable time too.
